His father was the owner of The Admiral Benbow, Ruyton XI Towns
He trained as a baker before starting his Army Career

His career in the army with the Montgomery Imperial Yeomanry took him on the South African Campaign, He was awarded the Imperial Yeomanry Long Service and Good conduct medal.

At the time of his death his unit was part of the supply chain and hospital site developed to defend the Suez Canal.
He died of Malaria on the 10th of May 1919 age 39
Buried or Cremated to lie in the cemetery of El-Qantarah el Sharqiyya El- Ismailia Port Said.
Remembered in the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt
